Looking for skiing in the Pocono Mountains that’s easy, affordable and enjoyable for everyone? Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain has been turning novice skiers into enthusiasts for over 40 years. First-time skiers will not be intimated by the gentle beginner slopes. Yet, advanced skiers will find challenging trails including a double black diamond run. The ski area near Lake Wallenpaupack is only 30 minutes from Silver Birches Resort, so you can stay lakeside while you slide the mountainside.
Go Downhill
Among all of the ski resorts in the Poconos, Ski Big Bear’s unique set-up makes the experience even more approachable. The main lodge, parking and all facilities are located at the mountain top. Visitors can get their bearings and get quick access to all the slopes. There are 26 skiable acres, 18 trails and six lifts, not to mention a terrain park for snowboarding. The elevation at the top is 1,250 feet and skiers can enjoy a 650-foot vertical drop on the slopes. With six trails classified as beginner, five intermediate and seven advanced runs, visitors can have fun mixing it up.
Slide & Glide
Beginners can take advantage of private lessons, a specialty at Ski Big Bear, before hitting the bunny slope. The run is equipped with a magic carpet giving new skiers an easy introduction to a chair lift experience. Snowtubing is another fun way to take part in the wintertime festivities. Ski Big Bear offers two tubing lanes that each run 500 feet. A Magic Carpet transports riders back to the top for another slide.
Snow Business
The mountain averages 50 inches of snow per year. A recent investment in new equipment means 100 percent snowmaking capabilities that allows for a constant base between 18 and 30 inches. Ski Big Bear is open Thursday to Monday, mid-December through Mid-March. Weekends tend to be busier, while weekday skiing offers a quieter experience. For a more economical trip, there’s night skiing. A fully stocked rental shop has all the equipment required for the slopes. The rental package includes skis, or snowboards, boots and poles. Helmets are available for an additional fee. The staff adjusts bindings to each skier’s size and style.
Fuel Up
Dining options at Ski Big Bear are as varied as the slopes outside. For a leisurely dinner, visitors can enjoy the Summit Restaurant. The sports bar offers a laid-back atmosphere while the snack bar/cafeteria offers plenty of grab-and-go options. There’s also a small market offering supplies and essentials.
